Scores: Music for Children

The Dublin Miniatures is a collection of twenty-two short piano pieces, mostly just 10-40 seconds long, and playable by musicians of different abilities, from young children to professionals.

CoMMA is a semi-improvised graphic score for flexible ensemble. The music is divided into ten 30-second sections, allowing the players to coordinate with a stopwatch.

This is one of three pieces written for the students of Caragh National School while I was Composer-in-Residence there from 2012-13. Waters Ways explores how young children might be able to play in many different time signatures by combining the composition process with pre-prepared workshop formats.

This is one of three pieces written for the students of Caragh National School while I was Composer-in-Residence there from 2012-13. Speech Singing is a musical game for a large number of people to speak at different pitches, creating a kind of spoken harmony. As a musical game, the composition can be very flexible and performed in different ways.

These Two Childrens Songs are part of a body of work written for the students of Caragh National School while I was Composer-in-Residence there from 2012-13. The Two Children's Songs draw on simple musical devices including simple repeated motifs and a call-and-response pattern in the Irish language.

The first three Beageens were written for a flexible ensemble in four parts. The second three, originally for piano, were arranged for ensemble later.

The second set of three Beageens were written for the Clavier Contemporain Weekend in the Frederic Chopin Conservatoire, Paris, where it was premiered by the 6- and 7-year old students of the conservatoire. The first three Beageens were also arranged for piano for the same concert. The other miniatures in this collection include A Cheltenham Miniature, which re-imagines Bach's Bist du bei mir, St. John's Blues, written as a composition exercise while I was teaching composition at York St. John University, and A Paris Miniature, written while sitting in a cafe during the Clavier Contemporain Weekend.
